“The past memories (no matter how boring they were) are so sweet that we love to keep going back to our flash-back’s. This article is dedicated to all the Bypassians who stayed at Mudbhatkal”
Somu 94 Batch
Who will forget the famous Ramu’s canteen … the official breakfast joint for AEC’ians at bypass.
The one rupee dosa’s , the Idly Curd and sugar( may be a weird combination but tasted better at ramu’s canteen) , the bun- sira/ chatni, and the mighty avalakki sambar ( to fill the empty stomach).
I still remember those month-ends when the pockets were empty and the stomach seems to be more empty than ever. Here we go to Ramu canteen ….order all the dosa’s and idly’s in a commanding loud voice … eat all that and at last whisper in Ramu’s ears to add the bill to our account and will be cleared as soon as the DD comes from home…..!!! ( we all should thank him for feeding us in our crises)
Oh those were days to remember till we die……. ………………..
………….. After being busy for the Internal exams ( who is saying we were studying)……. after the last exam … that evening, the mood all set for Gopal and me for a boose session at Ramus canteen.
Starting with the mixture/pickle Jockey and local kola…..… cheers …..… goes on … our party …
Soon after the boose session at Ramu’s canteen, we go to laxmi theater for … dammn… any movie which is running.. no matter if it’s of some mithun da movie or the dialogue king sai-kumar movie… let it be sentimental / action/ drama…. we all sit there and laugh till “The End” comes on the screen… Then come back to room laugh about the movie …. Awesome Days..
Now, Let me talk it straight. All bypassians know what were those “Tempos” and why are we talking about them.. and also bout K masters.
We all thank those Tempo’s from bottom of our Hand (not heart) …. they really helped us commute daily to college and back to the room.
We also had APM buses to commute … but they were … tooo … spacious and empty…and … boring….
That’s why every one preferred those Tempo’s…….. Am I saying right ???
I know that every one of us have our own sweet memories of those short but memorable joyrides.
Any bypassian saying ” I used to go in Tempo’s just to reach college in time …..!!!!” IS A BIG LIE……. ha ha ha
I still remember waiting in bypass (after a heavy break fast in Ramu’s canteen) for the 8.15 APM bus…… once you r in the bus then you see the big bunch of gals…. cant see the face…. u all know why… .. cant even recognize who… is who… The journey till college was short but …… was a unique memory every time.
The Ultimate Hangout for AEC’ians – Kubera
We really had lot of depressing moments back then…. starting with … Internals went bad, did not get marks in internals, feeling lonley, failed in exams, no girls, no co-education , no money to , No current (power) ……………. well you name it….!!!
In Bhatkal and at Bypass We had all the reasons to get depressed…
I still remember that we had spent a hell of time cursing ourselves for coming to bhatkal…
So… So when you are so depressed …. you should be only in one place to relive the stress.. In THE GRAND KUBERA
Every time I think of a depressed situation in Bhatkal, I recall only one place that came to our rescue…… THE GRAND KUBERA…..
Not only the depressed moments … even when we were happy and could not hold ourselves any more…. We went to Kubera
I am sure that we all have spent countless hours in kubera discussing how big and rich we all gonna be once we finish this course.
For all bypassins who never belived in travelling by Auto ….. when it comes to going Kubera… never think twice… get an auto or bus …. anything
Did’nt have any money ????? never mind …. your friends are not helping you ??? never mind … just tell them you are depressed/happy and going to Kubera!!!!! and see the magic ….Once the program is fixed the money use to flow to us like a miracle (that too with easy EMI’s) Thanks to all of those broad hearted friends
That dim light of kubera , those cabins filled with AEC’ans ….. sitting in a corner cabin with friends….. the initial discussion of what to order….. selecting the starters……. back to the hoot discussions till the order is served …… Cheers!!!! two glasses…… we are all in a different world …. then next…. finish the glasses … go to rest room… empty tanks ……. come back to the hot discussion…. order another XXXXX ….. finish that….. then comes the great food of kubera…..
That silkey Butter chicken with Butter Naan… hmmmm… God, I wished those moments lasted for, as long as it could….
So, now the Party is over ….. back to Bypass…. going to sleep …
Dont bother to get up early tomorrow … because its a Friday….
I am from the 1st batch, and language is too poor to communicate our wildly magical days at Bhatkal. We were pioneers- no College Building, no Lab, no Library, no Hostel blocks, skeletal Faculty. We had a mere 5 students from Bhatkal, Byndoor etc. Abul was the only Nawayati.
Reading Somu’s piece assuaged my fears that student life would be bland and dull. It is clear that the basic AECian touches were alive and the bypassians led an interesting life in the mid-90’s. I could fill in all the blanks (left out by Somu for the sake of discretion).
Long live the AECian spirit
Arun Ilanko – 1980 Batch
Good memoirs …. a little different from the experiences of guys who were in AEC during 80’s … & completely different from our experience – 1980 / first batch …. it was unique …
BK Sanjay – 1980 Batch
Kubera opened in 86……for us it was sindhu, shalimar, Mysore cafe and in the earlier days before sindhu it was another shop on the Mysore cafe road.
Col Ilango Rana – 1982 Batch
Every batch had its uniqueness. During our days we had the liberty to watch BF’s screened at Baindoor. The thrill was to travel on lorry tops to & fro late nights. Communication mode was either letters or telegram.. then it was trunk call and later upgraded to STD
Those days we had students joining from Kashmir to Kanyakumari
The 5th batch (1984) can boast that they were spread across from kashmir to kanyakumari and also from east to west Mumbai to Manipur
Kadir Nainar – 1984 Batch
The only solace those days of 90s where the friends, cards, Nagraj Canteen, Sindhu and Kubera. And as stated in the blog the tempo trips to Murdeswar 😃😃😃
Aravindh Ramalingam – 1992 Batch
Awesome memories.. Well written.
